Obituary for Betty Jane Johnson

Betty Jane Johnson of Birmingham died January 18, 2017. She was 55 years old. Betty was born September 4, 1961. She was the sixth and final child of Robert E. and Martha Johnson. She was married to Joseph A. Poggi; their daughter Maria was the light of her life. Betty joins her father Robert and parents in law Andrew and Geraldine Poggi in heaven. Betty is survived by her husband and daughter, her mother Martha, siblings Robert, Don, Connie, Nancy and Kathleen Diamond, sisters in law Santa Zawadiah and Karen Poggi, and many nieces and nephews.

Betty was a very happy child with a bright smile. Betty attended St. Mary’s of Redford and Susick Elementary Schools. As a child, she enjoyed being a Blue Bird and Brownie with her dear friend Maria Burchi. She treasured her early childhood friendships with Maria, Terri Jones and Robin McCarthy. She graduated from Warren High School in 1979.

Betty had a variety of jobs, including being a hostess at Ryan Road House, a representative at Allstate Insurance, Health US Inc. and a billing executive and shipping representative at Direct Rx Inc.

Betty also enjoyed her hobbies including horseback riding, playing piano, going up North with her sisters and friends, and playing euchre. She loved getting her daughter Maria dressed up and taking her to dance lessons, as well as dancing with Maria at home to their favorite music.

Betty married Joseph Poggi in 1995 and their daughter Maria was born in 1996. The family enjoyed traveling alone or with their friends the Skenders, the Wauns and the Volpes. They doted on Maria’s accomplishments at her school, the Academy of the Sacred Heart.
Her family and friends mourn her loss.

Betty described herself on her Facebook page:

I used to horseback ride at the Bloomfield Open Hunt club in Bloomfield Hills, MI. This became too painful on my body! So, I hope my horsey friends there, will ride baby ride! I have a cat and a dog, I'm a true lover for animals! I like real everything-real people-real food! You know actions always speak louder than words in life! So, I really enjoy down home cooking! I like to make homemade soups, and banana bread! Why you ask? Not only do I love how the house smells when I cook, it's healthy! The smells, and tastes, remind me there's no place like home. So, whoever who reads this remember all of your senses! Be grateful to be alive everyday, because every day is precious! God bless you all!

Friends may visit at Academy of Sacred Heart, 1250 Kensington Road, Bloomfield Hills, Friday, January 27th, 4pm until 7pm Prayer Service. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart, Saturday, January 28th at 10am.

Memorials appreciated to Academy of Sacred Heart, 1250 Kensington Road, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan 48304.
