Barbara I. Thurber, a resident of Birmingham for 50 years, died peacefully, October 24, 2017. She was 77 years old. Barbara was born August 6, 1940, in Detroit to Irene (nee Kramarenko) and Byron Brown.

A 1958 graduate of Dearborn High School, Barbara went on to graduate from The University of Michigan in 1962. She was a proud member of Chi-Omega Sorority and a lifelong fan of Michigan football. She also loved the Detroit Red Wings and Tigers. Barbara was a devoted animal lover, taking in many strays who eventually became her beloved pets. She enjoyed gardening in her yard, and taught high school history before raising her kids.

She also volunteered throughout her time with The Junior League of Birmingham and worked with the Greenwood Cemetery Advisory Board. She enjoyed travelling the world with her husband, kids and grandchildren. Some of her highlights were shopping in Hong Kong, sushi in Tokyo, visiting family and friends in Europe, and most recently dog-sledding on an Alaskan glacier. She loved spending summers in Harbor Springs and on Walloon Lake. She was an amazing cook and always enjoyed entertaining family and friends during the holidays. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, she was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by many.

Barbara is survived by her children, John (Jenny) Thurber and Sarah (Craig) Lindsay and grandchildren, Katharine and Andrew Lindsay. She is also survived by her sister, Marilynne Ponto and brother, Warren (Diane) Brown. Barbara is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, John Thurber.
