Obituary for Barbara Lee Brummel Czamanske

Barbara Lee Brummel Czamanske

Barbara Czamanske was born in Detroit, MI to parents Ivan and Marcella (O’Conner) Brummel. She had two sisters, the late Patricia (Bill) Tomlinson and the late Gail Fear. Barbara attended Wayne State University where she studied Elementary Education. In her senior year at Wayne she was crowned “Governor’s Lady.”

Also at Wayne, she met Paul Czamanske and they were married in 1951. They moved first to Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix, Arizona where Barbara taught first grade and Paul was in the Air Force. Two years later they moved back to Detroit and Paul returned to work with Ford Motor Company. The couple would go on to move more than 19 times, mostly in conjunction with Paul’s sales and marketing career with Ford. They especially loved the six years they lived in Europe – in both Germany and England.

Barbara’s greatest joy was being a mother and a grandmother and the legacy of her life is her loving family. She is survived by her husband Paul William, their four children: Paul William III of Glen Arbor, MI; Elizabeth Marten (Stoik) of Elmhurst, IL; Peter Marten of Glen Ellyn, IL; and Maria Eileen (Stuart) of McMinnville, OR; their children’s spouses, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Wherever she went, Barbara made her surroundings more beautiful and was widely admired for her grace and elegance. She loved to travel and took great pleasure in discovering art history and collecting art and antiques. In each place she lived, she was active in her community and made many friends, devoting much of her time to supporting the arts. Most recently, in the Detroit area, she was active in the Women’s Committee of Cranbrook Academy of Art, the Volunteer Council of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and The Understudies of Wayne State University Theatres. Both Barbara and Paul were on the organizing committees of the Detroit International Wine Auction in support of College for Creative Studies. Barbara and her husband were long-time members of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Birmingham, Michigan.

In 2012, Barbara and Paul moved to Elmhurst, IL to live closer to some of their children. Their 66th wedding anniversary will be June 29, 2017.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 1800 W. Maple Road, Birmingham, Tuesday, June 27th at11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10am. A luncheon will immediately follow. Private interment in White Chapel Cemetery, Troy.

Memorials appreciated to the College for Creative Studies, 201 E. Kirby St., Detroit, Michigan 48202.
