Obituary for Alfred C. Joyce

Alfred C. “Boots” Joyce died May 20, 2018 at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was 89 years old. Alfred was born on November 18, 1928 in Royal Oak to parents, Adeline (nee Gherke) and Henry Joyce.

Alfred graduated from Royal Oak High School in 1947. After graduation, in December 1950, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He proudly served for 2 years in the second armored division as a tank driver in Germany. While in the military, Alfred married the love of his life, Luella Dreon, on March 2, 1951 in Lampasses, Texas: a marriage that would span 67 incredible years.

After his military service he attended Oakland Community College from 1977-1979. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Royal Oak for 62 years. He was a mail carrier for 33 years and a CDL driver trainer for another 29 years. He also held several part time jobs in the 1960s, umpiring for Royal Oak Little League Baseball and at Duncan Willows Flowers of Clawson.

Despite his busy work schedule and raising 4 children, Alfred managed to stay very involved with the community. He was a member of the Clawson Public Schools Dad’s Club, he served on the Traffic Board, and was an auxiliary police officer for the City of Clawson. He was also charter member #100 of the Clawson-Troy Elks Post #2169, a member of the Clawson Eagles Aerie 3926, and member of the American Legion Post 0377 Elcho, Wisconsin.

Alfred’s greatest joy came from spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and dear friend to many. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

Alfred is survived by his beloved wife, Luella “Lu” Joyce and his loving children, Tom (Jan) Joyce, Duane (Catherine) Joyce, Jayne (Steve) Dunseith, and Marjorie (John) Oberer. Alfred is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Tim (Becky) Joyce, Erin Joyce, Kelly (Chaz) Alcorn, Tiffany Joyce, Trevor (Danielle) Joyce, Stephanie (Phillip) Zimny, Raymond Dunseith, Jaclyn McGraw, and Nathan Oberer and his 3 great-grandchildren, Charlie, Avery, and Drew. Alfred is preceded in death by his dear siblings, Virginia Solberg, Thelma Powers, Bud Joyce, Poncho Joyce, Walt Joyce, Russ Joyce, and Pat Joyce.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) on Friday, May 25th at 1pm. Friends may visit Thursday, May 24th 2-8pm. Burial will be in Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan.
