A longtime resident of Detroit, Mr. Kara grew up in the city and attended Detroit Northeastern High School. After graduation, he worked as a machinist for Bohn Aluminum and Brass Corporation. In 1943, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served proudly in the South Pacific during the Second World War. He worked chiefly as an Air Plane Armorer and participated in the 1945 Battle of Okinawa. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps on May 19, 1946.

Professionally, Mr. Kara worked as a Power Lineman for the City of Detroit until his retirement in 1978. He then moved to Posen, Michigan, where he lived until 2001, at which time he settled in Rochester Hills.
